Dr. G,
I wanted to take a few minutes to write you a quick note on my progress but before I do I should tell you how all my back pain started.
On 6-5-15 Amy (my fiance) and I took a trip out of town to Gatlinburg. Early Saturday morning, I woke up to use the bathroom and jumped out of bed to the most horrific pain I’ve ever felt before. At the time I didn’t know what it was. I managed to lay down on the floor, thinking that if I could just stretch it out, everything would be okay. That was further from the truth because the more I tried to stretch the worse the pain got.
On plan for this trip was to go horseback riding, hiking and ziplining but because the pain only got worse we were not able to do any of those things. Amy and I walked to the nearest drugstore to get pain medication. I bought two bottles of back pain pills and immediately took 3-4 pills and then another 3-4 pills and then another set of pills. By noon I had consumed over 15 pills. The pain did go down but my left leg started to get numb, which concerned me greatly because I’ve never had that feeling before. I tried to find a doctor but none were available on a Saturday in a small town.
The next day I took another 15 plus pills to control the pain but on Monday when I woke up the pain got even worse. I took 15 pills again but I think I became immune to them because they didn’t help. I called work to get the day off and got the earliest appointment to see a doctor. In less than 4 minutes from the start of my visit, I’m out of the doctor’s office with stronger prescription medications. He couldn’t tell me what was wrong until I got an MRI. He just wrote me a prescription. The next day I got the MRI and the day after that I went back to the doctor to see the results.
A herniated disk is what I had. I didn’t know what it was or what it meant. The doctor quickly suggested I go see a surgeon to see if I needed surgery. I didn’t know what to think. I was mad and afraid at the same time. I started to research online for natural ways to treat my herniated disc. I found YouTube videos titled “how to treat your own back” using the McKenzie method. I watched every video on it and did the exercises. Finally I was at least able to walk but the pain was definitely still present because I couldn’t stand up straight and I couldn’t stand for more than 2 minutes straight but I could at least walk and sit down.
At this point, I had hope that I could get better without surgery but I knew it was going to be a long process. I was very sad and even depressed for a while. Prior to my injury I was very active, working out 6 times a week and some days even twice a day. I love the gym and working out. As I laid on the floor for many hours I wondered if I would ever get back to the gym. This was a very sad moment in my life.
The surgeon’s office kept calling me to set up an appointment but I kept ignoring them. Finally I answered and told them I would not see them because surgery is not an option for me.
I kept watching the YouTube videos and doing the back exercises determined that I was going to get better on my own. One of the videos I was about to watch had an ad popup with the Baker brothers, the ad kept me watching because a lady was telling her story on how Baker Chiropractic and Wellness helped her prevent a 3rd surgery and how her pain level went from a 9-10 on a daily basis down to a 1.
I immediately took the number down and called your office first thing the next morning. The lady who answered the phone was so nice and caring. She asked about my situation, she asked if I had heard of the McKenzie method? I’m like “YEA” super excited because at that moment, I knew I was calling the right place. I quickly set up an appointment that same day and that’s when I met you Dr. G.
As you already know, I was in very bad shape but fast forward today, six months later…
- I can walk normal again
- I can run (ran a 5K in September)
- I can stand on my calves (I couldn’t even do a calf raise on my left foot with only my body weight)
- On a scale of 1-10, the pain is less than a 1, sometimes weeks go by without any pain at all
- I’m back to work doing all my normal duties
- I can bend down without any pain
- I can lift heavy boxes
- More importantly I’m back to doing what I love, working out
I’m so thankful that I’ve met you and the Baker Chiropractic and Wellness family. Because of you I’m now smarter on how to treat my body. I’m getting stronger every time I come visit you but what I’m most excited about is the hope you gave me when I was at my lowest point. Less than 6 months ago I was hopeless on the ground and you’ve given me my strength back and for that I’m temporarily grateful.
Thank you for all you have done for me!*
Sincerely,
Mago M.
