Arthritis refers to inflammation between joints. Joints are areas in the body where two bones meet. Joints normally contain cartilage which acts as a shock absorber and allows for fluid movement. With arthritis, the cartilage in the joints breaks down and bones rub together causing swelling, stiffness and pain. Arthritis can have a huge impact on your physical and mental health, especially as the disease advances and limits movement.

There are over 100 different types of arthritis. Here are some of the most common:
Osteoarthritis: This is the most common form of arthritis and involves degeneration of the joint due to trauma from an injury, infection or age. Osteoarthritis typically affects the joints of the hands, feet, hips, back or knees. It is seen frequently in the elderly but can develop at any age.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): This form of arthritis is a disorder that not only affects joints but many other areas of the body as well. Rheumatoid arthritis is a result of the body’s immune system attacking tissues of the body. RA is often seen in the joints of the fingers, wrists, elbows and knees. It can lead to severe deformity if left untreated. Rheumatoid arthritis is most commonly found in adults over the age of 20 but can develop in children
Gout: This is an extremely painful form of arthritis characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness and tenderness in joints. The joint at the base of the big toe is the one most commonly affected by Gout, but it can form in any joint throughout your body. But don’t just take our word for it, read what one of patients had to say about how we were able to help her with arthritis:
“Over the last ten years arthritis had made its claim on me and resulted in two back surgeries, two foot surgeries, an ankle surgery and two knee surgeries. After years of suffering I made the decision to have a knee replacement and thought it was going to be the answer to my physical challenges. I wanted to reclaim my active lifestyle as a teacher, performer and sports enthusiast. The knee replacement itself was successful, but approximately two months after recovering from the surgery I began having horrific back and leg pain again. This time I was determined to find an answer without surgery. My son, who is studying to be a chiropractor himself, insisted that I go to a chiropractor. So, with some hesitation and uncertainty, I sought treatment with Dr. Baker.
I remember my first several visits being overcome with emotion. Dr. Baker and his staff were warm and welcoming; I immediately felt they genuinely cared. They gave me hope. I was impressed with the patient education and realized how uninformed I was regarding the whole realm of chiropractic care. It was clear that treatment would take time and would require patience and a commitment on my part. After the first few treatments I could feel a difference. I improved more and more with each visit. Now, after eight months, I feel stronger and healthier than I have in years and plan to continue chiropractic care as a way of life.” – M. Lewis
