Attention Deficit Hyperactive
Disorder ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder or ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder in children. In fact, the number of children in the United States diagnosed with ADHD in 1988 was around 500,000. As of 2010, in excess of 5 Million U.S. children were diagnosed with ADHD.
The staggering increase in ADHD diagnoses is directly related to the dramatic increase in drugs and medications being prescribed to children.

Do you know what the most commonly prescribed drug is for kids between the ages of 12-17?

The answer is Ritalin (which is the brand name for the drug methylphenidate). Ritalin is prescribed more to teenagers than antibiotics! Like most prescription drugs, there are side effects associated with Ritalin. Many of these side effects can be quite serious.

At Baker Chiropractic and Wellness, we have been helping children of all ages with ADHD for over 26 years. Our approach to ADHD does not involve prescribing drugs along with their very dangerous side effects. Rather, our unique care involves restoring and maintaining the health of the body’s central nervous system as well as providing guidance on nutrition, diet, and exercise that enables a child to overcome this disorder.

What is Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD is a disorder that affects the central nervous system. The condition is characterized by one or more of the following behaviors:

  1. Lack of attention or inattentiveness
  2. Over-activity or hyperactivity
  3. Impulsivity or impulsive behavior

Symptoms of ADHD Behavior

1. Lack of attention or inattentiveness

  • Failure to pay close attention to details
  • Careless mistakes in schoolwork
  • Appearing to not listen when talked to
  • Difficulty focusing and sustaining attention for tasks or when playing
  • Difficulty organizing tasks or thoughts
  • Frequently forgetting things
  • Easily distracted
  • Difficulty finishing schoolwork and other projects

2. Lack of attention or inattentiveness

  • Squirming in a seat or cannot stay seated
  • Fidgeting of hands
  • Cannot play quietly
  • Excessive talking
  • Constantly moving and “on the go”

3. Impulsivity or impulsive behavior

  • Interrupts others
  • Intrudes on others
  • Blurting of answers before a question is completed

Side Effects of Ritalin

Drug companies attempt to provide quick treatments for common health conditions like ADHD in the form of prescription medications like Ritalin. However, there are very serious and dangerous side effects associated with ADHD medications such as Ritalin. These side effects include the following:

  1. Chronic Headaches
  2. Nervousness
  3. Insomnia
  4. Slowing of Growth
  5. Nausea
  6. Dizziness
  7. Anorexia
  8. Abdominal Pain
  9. Seizures
  10. Heart Palpitations
  11. Addiction

The U.S. Government classifies the drug methylphenidate (Ritalin) with cocaine and morphine because it is highly addictive.

Like many prescription drugs, Ritalin only serves to mask the symptoms of ADHD, it does not cure the disorder nor does it address the underlying cause of the condition or teach children skills to overcome ADHD.

Special Note: At Baker Chiropractic and Wellness, we do not support the use of Ritalin. We have a much different approach to ADHD. One that addresses the underlying anatomical causes of ADHD; optimizes the health of a child’s central nervous system and; teaches them a proper diet, nutrition, and exercise that are essential and beneficial to both their mental and physical well-being.

How We Have Helped Patients with ADHD

“When I first came to see Dr. Baker I was lazy and got bad grades in school. I was getting into trouble all the time and not listening to my teachers. My report card was real bad and my parents were very frustrated with me. I was taking tons of medications for my ADD and ADHD. First I was on Ritalin. Then I took Concerta. I was also on Medadate and Zoloft.

Since I began treatment with Dr. Baker, I’ve been able to get off all my medications and actually feel like a human being again. I used to walk around feeling like I was stoned and in another world. I was depressed and flunking school. Now, I feel super and on top of the world.

I can’t thank Dr. Baker enough for all his help in changing my life.”– K. Mason

A part of chiropractic care is correcting alignment of joints which impact nerves and inhibit the body’s very powerful and innate ability to heal. The best part of chiropractic care is that is does not utilize expensive and risky prescription drugs or surgery.

But don’t just take our word for it, read what one of patients had to say about how we were able to help her with arthritis:

“I first found Baker Chiropractic after injuring my back. I was standing on a patch of ice while lifting my 5-year-old into her car seat. I started to slide and twisted in an odd direction to avoid dropping my daughter. I felt an odd sensation in my back when I fell then the pain started. I spent two days in bed using ice and heating pads. Nothing was helping. I had always been rather skeptical chiropractics believing it was gimmicky nonsense. At this point though with 3 young children and being in such pain I became desperate. I made my appointment and met with Dr. Baker still quite skeptical. When my adjustment was over I was amazed at the relief I felt. I was able to move again. I admit I was shocked how well it worked.

After being a client for a while Dr. Baker told me about how chiropractic care can help ADD & ADHD. Unwilling to medicate my 5-year-old for her ADD, I decided to start bringing her in for adjustments as well. She loves Dr. Baker and her adjustments. She talks about how they make her feel better.

Now nearly a year later Dr. Baker is now treating 4 generations of women in my family. I am very happy I found Baker Chiropractic.” – M. Murphy

“There I was last summer, coping with months of unemployment and no prospects for work. My adolescent son found refuge from the stress and uncertainty through video gaming. When he wasn’t gaming, he was oppositional and agitated. He lived on soda and snacks, lost interest in sports, friends and swimming at the neighborhood pool. His posture deteriorated after spending weeks of summer vacation hunched over the laptop on the floor, addicted to an internet game.

I was busy working up resumes and cover letters, trying to score a job interview. I became concerned at how withdrawn and miserable my son was. He complained of low back and neck pain and not being able to sleep. He didn’t want to attend 7th grade and exhibited mounting social and behavioral problems. He was skipping gym class, being bullied by classmates and his back pain grew increasingly worse. I did not want to have more drugs added to the ADHD medications and Anti- Depressants my son was already prescribed.

Years earlier, I had experienced positive results from chiropractic care. I wasn’t sure if adolescents could benefit, but began searching for a doctor of chiropractic. I made an appointment with Dr. Paul Baker to have my son’s back checked.

Dr. Baker and the staff at Baker Chiropractic transformed my son!

In less than a year, he has become positive, involved with his friends and has developed a self esteem that hasn’t existed before. He no longer has continuous back and neck pain; he sleeps well and looks forward to his weekly chiropractic adjustments.

Our life has been positively infused in so many ways through the comprehensive care we both receive at Baker Chiropractic.

We now focus on wellness; from what we put into our body nutritionally, to treating the defeatist mindset that had invaded everyday living. Our goal is to no longer use the pharmaceuticals we had relied on to manage the symptoms caused by subluxations in our spine.

I am now happily employed and my son is a successful 8th grader. Our health and well being have become integral to a happy life and our future is so much brighter.

Our lifestyle transformation is the direct result of chiropractic care from Dr. Paul Baker and his encouraging and caring staff. If you are receptive to the power of positivity and the healing that results from a subluxation free spine, Baker Chiropractic can change your life.”– K. Flick

Our Approach To Treating ADHD

Chiropractic health care focuses on the health of the body’s central nervous system. Doctors of chiropractic are trained to identify and treat problems with the nerves of the human body. When your central nervous system is healthy, you will be free from pain and disorders like ADHD.

The best feature about chiropractic care is that it does not use prescription drugs or surgery to treat health care problems. Chiropractic care removes subluxations which impact nerves and inhibit the body’s normal functions and innate ability to heal.
