What is Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease caused by either the inability of the pancreas to produce a hormone called insulin or the body’s inability to use the insulin properly. When you eat food or drink a beverage, the body’s digestive system begins to break down the food into sugars or glucose. The sugar passes into the bloodstream and is transported to the body’s cells via insulin which, as previously stated, is produced by the pancreas.
Under normal conditions, the pancreas produces the right amount of insulin to accommodate the quantity of sugar. With diabetes, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, it produces no insulin whatsoever or the body’s cells do not respond to insulin. As a result, sugar builds up in the blood, gets removed by the kidneys and passes from the body via urine as waste.

The three (3) most common types of diabetes are:

  1. Type 1 Diabetes
  2. Type 2 Diabetes and
  3. Gestational Diabetes.

Causes of Diabetes

The exact underlying cause or causes of diabetes has not been isolated and determined. However, there are a number of factors that place people at risk, including, but not limited to, the following:
  1. Genetics
  2. Spinal Injury
  3. Damaged Nerves
  4. Pancreas Dysfunction
  5. Abnormal Immune System
  6. Lifestyle – Especially a sedentary lifestyle which is dominated by sitting and resting with little or no exercise.
  7. Unhealthy Diet and Poor Nutritional Intake
  8. Obesity
  9. Age

Type I Diabetes

Type I diabetes is commonly referred to as “insulin dependent diabetes” or “juvenile on-set diabetes”. It tends to affect younger people below the age of 20. With this type of diabetes, the pancreas makes little to no insulin.

Type II Diabetes

Type II diabetes was commonly referred to as “non-insulin dependent diabetes” or “adult-onset diabetes”. In the past, this type of diabetes was usually found in people older than age 40. However, this form of diabetes has been on a rapid increase in adolescents due to a drastic rise in obesity and sedentary lifestyles. The phrase “adult-onset diabetes” is now rarely used. This is the most common form of diabetes and with this type of diabetes, the pancreas either produces a reduced amount of insulin; cells in the body do not respond normally to insulin; or both.

Diabetic Neuropathy

Diabetic Neuropathy is damage to nerves in your body due to the high blood sugar levels associated with diabetes. Diabetic neuropathy is characterized by pain, numbness, burning and stinging as well as problems with balance and walking. If left unchecked and uncontrolled, diabetic neuropathy may ultimately result in amputation.

Almost all diabetic neuropathy is caused by a tissue destroying process called ischemia. When the nervous system is functioning at optimum levels, nerve tissues receive nutrient-rich, oxygenated blood via microscopic capillaries. In diabetics, high glucose levels in the blood stream can block the flow of these essential nutrients and oxygen to the nerve tissues. Over time, the nerve tissues become starved and damaged.

Because of the damage inflicted, the nervous system is unable to completely control and maintain organ or organ system function. This leads to the symptoms of pain, numbness, burning, and instability described above.
If caught in time and with the proper care and treatment, peripheral nerves affected by diabetic neuropathy can heal and regenerate. If you are or think you may be suffering from diabetic neuropathy, please don’t delay seeking treatment. Contact us by calling (513) 561-2273 or Schedule an Appointment here on our website.

Gestational Diabetes
