What is Fibromyalgia

As outlined above, fibromyalgia is a health disorder characterized by chronic pain and sensitivity in muscles, tendons and joints. The pain associated with fibromyalgia is usually described as a consistent dull ache. When pressure is applied to certain areas of the body known as tender points, the pain intensifies. At times, the pain can be excruciating.

The tender point areas of the body commonly include:

  • Knees
  • Thighs
  • Hips
  • Elbows
  • Neck
  • Shoulders
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Head

The long term pain of fibromyalgia facilitates the onset of many related health conditions including:

  • Headaches
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Fatigue
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

The main symptom of fibromyalgia is pain. The pain can be mild or it can be severe. Frequently, the pain of fibromyalgia is a constant mild pain with sudden outbursts of severe pain.

People suffering from fibromyalgia usually have trouble sleeping. They will awaken with pain and stiffness. The interruption of quality sleep patterns prevents fibromyalgia sufferers from gaining beneficial sleep which makes them feel tired at all times, even when they wake up. The constant pain coupled with lack of deep sleep may lead to mood swings and depression.

For some battling fibromyalgia, the pain subsides over the course of the day, but gets worse at night. Others fight through the pain all day long and into the night.

The intensity of pain associated with fibromyalgia may also increase during physical activity, cold weather, periods of anxiety and stress.

Causes of Fibromyalgia

The medical community cannot pinpoint the exact cause of fibromyalgia. However, research suggests fibromyalgia is a result of problems with the body’s central nervous system which may have started with an infection or some type of physical or emotional trauma. Because of abnormalities with the central nervous system, people with fibromyalgia may have lower thresholds for pain.

With fibromyalgia, the nerves of the body become overly sensitive and erroneously transmit high levels of pain signals to the brain. Because of this miscommunication, levels of certain chemicals in the brain that signal pain (known as neurotransmitters) increase. Additionally, the brain’s pain receptors become over stimulated and more sensitive. This results in the brain overreacting to nerve signals triggering feelings of pain.

Why Baker Chiropractic and Wellness May Help with Fibromyalgia

Chiropractic care focuses on the health and function of the body’s central nervous system. When the body’s central nervous system is optimized and 100% healthy, all systems within the body perform properly without pain. When there are interferences (known as subluxations) in the central nervous system, the systems of the body are not able to function at peak levels which can lead to numerous health issues, including fibromyalgia.

Removing subluxations from the central nervous system when someone suffers from fibromyalgia allows for normal communications with the brain to be restored. This decreases the increased sensitivity and overreactions within the brain described above. The best part of chiropractic care is that is does not utilize expensive and risky prescription drugs or surgery. It’s safe and most of all, effective!

But don’t just take our word for it, read what one of patients had to say about how we were able to help her with fibromyalgia:

“I had fibromyalgia for approximately 7 years. When I entered the office of Baker Chiropractic for the first time, I was experiencing much pain. Especially at the base of my head, down through my neck and shoulders and all the way to my lower back. I felt like every muscle in those areas was tied into thousands of tight knots. Almost any movement caused me pain and discomfort. Many other joints in my body were hurting causing me to see many doctors in the last 7 years.

I left each of the previous doctors’ offices frustrated by a lack of concern and their eagerness to prescribe medications, none of which were very effective.

After 1 ½ months of chiropractic care at Baker Chiropractic, I am a changed person. I have much less pain and tightness throughout my body. I sleep considerably better at night and therefore, have much more energy during the day. Overall, from headache to muscle and joint pain and stiffness, I just physically feel better!

Emotionally, I am much better too. I am not frustrated and better positioned to cope with issues. Baker Chiropractic understands and is knowledgeable about fibromyalgia.

It’s wonderful having people be excited as I am about making me feel better! – K. Wones
