1. Idiopathic: As described above, this is scoliosis without an exact cause. This type is grouped by age into the following:
Infantile: Idiopathic scoliosis in children ages 3 and under.
Juvenile: Idiopathic scoliosis in children between the ages of 4 and 10.
Adolescent: Idiopathic scoliosis in older children between the ages of 11-18.
Adult: Idiopathic scoliosis in a person older than 18 years of age.
2. Congenital: This type is present at birth. It occurs when a baby’s spine does not form properly.
3. Neuromuscular: This type is caused by nervous system problem that affects muscles of the body.
4. Degenerative: This type occurs after a trauma to the spine (injury or illness), back surgery or osteoporosis.
