Text Neck

Text Neck

If you are age 50 and over, you most likely have incorporated texting on your cell phone or smart phone into regular communications with family, friends and associates.
If you are between the ages of 30-50, you are probably sending and receiving at least five to ten text messages on a daily basis.
If you are under the age of 30, statistics show you are sending a minimum of 3,000 text messages per month. In many cases, the volume is much higher than that.
Texting or text messaging has become a way of life for young and old alike and it can be a pain in the neck – literally.

New Version of an Old Health Condition

People who are frequently hunched over their mobile devices are experiencing headaches, neck pain and shoulder pain in rapidly growing numbers.
Text Neck is the term that has been coined to describe the headaches, neck pain and shoulder pain that manifests from the curved posture created by extensive use of a mobile device.
While Text Neck is the term that has been developed to relate to the pain that can materialize from frequent texting, the condition has been around since way before the first cell phone. Text Neck is the modern day term for the more classical health condition known as Forward Head Posture.
At Baker Chiropractic and Wellness, we’ve been helping patients find relief from the pain associated with forward head posture for over 20 years.
Texting is a form of communication that is only getting more popular. It’s important for people of all ages to keep their spine healthy to maintain good posture in order to adapt to the strain texting places on your body.

Forward Head Posture

Forward Head Posture or FHP is a health condition where the position of your head moves forward from the center of the shoulders. As your head moves forward your center of gravity shifts and the weight of your head dramatically increases. This can create a domino effect of painful and potentially serious health conditions.

There are steps you can take to prevent text neck and forward head posture. The first step is keeping your spine and posture properly aligned and healthy. Regular chiropractic care is ideal for this. We will also show you quick and easy daily exercises and teach you techniques for holding your mobile device that limit strain on your neck and spine.

A Patient Tells Her Story

Amanda came to Baker Chiropractic and Wellness suffering from severe neck pain and constant headaches. After a thorough examination, we discovered she was battling forward head posture.
Amanda has been kind enough to share her story to help others. She writes:
TEXT-NECK
“When I initially made the appointment to see Dr. Patrick Baker, I had no idea that I would still be going a year and a half later or that it would turn out to be such a life-changing decision! After my spinal exam and x-ray results were in, I found out that I was suffering from a condition called forward head posture. I have also suffered with migraines and Dr. Baker assured me that the chiropractic adjustments would help with those as well. I decided to proceed with Dr. Baker’s treatment plan, and it was one of the best choices I have ever made. After the first couple weeks of adjustments, I noticed a dramatic decrease in the level of neck pain I was experiencing. The constant headaches began to subside, and within a month, I was virtually pain free. And that was just the beginning. I also noticed that I was sleeping better and had more energy.”
