What is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome is a condition where nerves and blood vessels get compressed due to an inadequate opening in the part of your body called the thoracic outlet.
This is an area between the bottom of your neck and armpit. If the muscles, bones or other tissues located in this area become inflamed or out of place, it can cause the thoracic outlet to become smaller. When this happens, nerves and blood vessels may become pinched. Pain will soon follow and it won’t go away until the normal passage way of the thoracic outlet is restored.

Symptoms of TOS

Symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome include pain in the neck, shoulders, arms or hands. The level of the pain can vary from occasional mild pain to constant severe pain.
In addition to the symptoms of pain, someone who has TOS may also experience poor blood circulation in their arms and hands. This can cause tingling, numbness and weakness in the arms, hands and fingers as well as discoloration from lack of blood supply.

Causes of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

Injuries to the tissues or bones located in the thoracic outlet area are a common cause of TOS. The trauma is typically the result of things like auto accidents, job-related activities or sports-related incidents. Pregnancy can also lead to thoracic outlet syndrome as a result of the changes in a mother’s body.

Our Approach To Treating TOS

At Baker Chiropractic and Wellness, we focus on the health of the central nervous system. Our chiropractic physicians are specifically educated and trained to identify and treat problems with the nerves of the human body. When your central nervous system is healthy, all systems of the body work properly.
A condition called a subluxation can impair or damage nerves throughout your body. Subluxations are created by things like inflamed muscle tissues or misaligned bones. We are able to precisely identify and remove subluxations. When we do, the health of your nerves and the normal function of the systems within your body are restored. It also resolves painful health conditions like thoracic outlet syndrome.
The best feature about our chiropractic care is that it does not use harmful and expensive prescription drugs or surgery. It is safe and most of all, effective.
