Local Surgeon Sued for Medical Malpractice & Charged with Medicare Fraud
You may have seen the news coverage this year about Cincinnati area spine surgeon Dr. Atiq Durrani. Dr. Durrani is being sued by more than 150 former patients for medical malpractice. These people are claiming Dr. Durrani performed surgeries on them that were never needed. As a result, their lives have been changed temporarily.
If negatively impacting the lives of hundreds of people wasn’t enough, Dr. Durrani was also charged and recently arrested for Medicare fraud. The doctor billed Medicare $11 million for interior lumbar fusion surgeries from February 1, 2010 through January 31, 2013 according to the complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
His billings to the Medicare System for interior lumbar fusion surgeries were more than any other physician in Ohio. Most of these surgeries were performed by Dr. Durrani in southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky.
