Ohio Governor John Kasich recently signed House Bill 487. This is legislation that will reform the way Ohio’s healthcare providers assess and clear student athletes with concussions.
This legislation will bring together both medical doctors and chiropractic physicians to act as one voice in submitting recommendations and guidelines to improve the safety and welfare of student athletes.
House Bill 487 establishes a committee under the Ohio Department of Health made up of medical doctors and chiropractic physicians who will be charged with establishing the proper education, training and background needed to clear student athletes who have suffered a concussion.
Over the last two years the Ohio State Chiropractic Association (OSCA) has been educating Ohio lawmakers about the need to reform Ohio’s concussion management standards for student athletes.
Football Players Are Most Susceptible
Concussions are the most common type of head injury for athletes. Football players incur the most concussions followed by hockey players, boxers, rugby players and snow skiers.
A concussion can cause impairment with concentration, memory, problem solving and behavior. It can also lead to frequent headaches, dizziness, sensitivity to light and problems with balance.
