Dr. Brian Mouch

Dr. Brian Mouch, DC - ChiropractorI grew up in Columbus, Ohio, graduating from high school in 1975. I spent most of my high school years in the pool training as a competitive swimmer and working so I had my own spending cash, which was used for my secondary education at BGSU, where I graduated with a degree in Education, specializing in the sciences and math. I participated in three sports while there: swimming, water polo, and rugby. I worked in construction in the summers. I graduated from college with no debt!

I taught school in Atlanta for a year and then in Houston for a year. Both summers, I worked in construction and, on the weekends, I worked at the Port of Houston as a longshoreman. In 1982, I was hit broadside by a car that had run a red light. The injuries were severe. I went the medical route as I knew nothing about chiropractic and for nearly a year life was a struggle due to the pain I was in: headaches, lower back pain, and numbness in my hands. Two of my friends urged me to go see a chiropractor. I was reluctant as my mother had worked in the medical profession all of her adult life. I finally relented and went to see a chiropractor in Dallas, Texas. He performed x-rays and an examination and had me return the next day. During the consultation I had an epiphany, “this sounded so cool and made perfect sense.” He then proceeded to turn me on each side and adjust me. That first adjustment, everything cracked, and I felt this warm fuzzy feeling all over. After a mere two weeks of care the headaches went away completely. The lower back pain persisted but was vastly improved. I realized after that first adjustment that I wanted to be a chiropractor and spread the word.  It was a life-changing experience.

I had to go back to school and finish the prerequisites. I was told that chiropractic had started in Davenport, Iowa. According to my chiropractor, 75% of all the chiropractors in the world were from Palmer. I started there in the summer of 1986, graduating with research honors in 1989 and published a landmark study in January 1991: “Chiropractic Effects On Athletic Ability”, Journal of Chiropractic Research and Clinical Investigation, vol. 6, no. 4, pp. 84-87. We took over forty patients that had no problems or complaints and over a six week period demonstrated a 12% improvement in strength, speed, agility and reaction time. Following these same patients for another 6 weeks demonstrated an 18% improvement. Nothing like this had ever been done before. This study has been redone several times, once checking blood pressure and endurance of South Carolina College baseball players and back in Davenport with middle school students who demonstrated improvement in their grades.

Shortly after moving to Cincinnati in 1990, I met the woman of my dreams who had several young children. I had to find out more about children. I became a Fellow of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (1996). In 1994, I completed the Masters Certification Program on Whiplash Injuries from the San Diego Spine Institute. In 1999, I was the Chairperson for the Ohio State Chiropractic Association on Nutrition. In 2001, I completed the Chiropractic Craniopath program at Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis, Missouri. I’ve been able to incorporate these additional skills into a specialty of “molding” infant skulls. Look at your child and see if their eyes are level, if the ears project out the same from the head and if the skull appears symmetric. Most often, you will be able to identify one of these. Despite being in my 60s now, I have no intention of ever retiring. Chiropractic is so exciting and we see miracles every day!
