Link Between Low Oxygen Levels and Cancer

oxygen levels and cancerA study by Dr. Sara Rockwell from Yale University School of Medicine shows how lack of oxygen in a cell may cause cancer. Dr. Rockwell studies malignant changes on the cellular level and has written, “The physiological effects of hypoxia (low oxygen) and the associated micro environmental inadequacies increase mutation rates, select for cells deficient in normal pathways of programmed cell death, and contribute to the development of an increasingly invasive, metastatic phenotype.”

Everyone breathes in oxygen. So why do some people have higher levels of oxygen in their cells than others? It all depends on how much oxygen your cells are absorbing.

Essential Element for Oxygen Absorption

The most important element needed in your body to optimize oxygen absorption into your body’s cells is Essential Fatty Acids or EFAs. Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats are Essential Fatty Acids but you need the right balance of both. Omega 3s are anti-inflammatory and Omega 6s are pro-inflammatory. The ratio of Omega 3s to Omega 6s is very important.

Inflammation is your body’s natural immune system response. It’s needed to protect your body and heal the injured or infected area. Omega 6s help the inflammation process. However, if you do not have enough Omega 3s in your body and there is long-term chronic inflammation, it can cause a long list of health issues.

What Are Essential Fatty Acids?

Essential Fatty Acids are something that we must get from our diet and supplements. Our bodies do not manufacture EFAs.

If you do not ingest EFAs from your diet or supplements, then you will become deficient and most likely very sick. However, it is important to understand how to obtain EFAs from your diet. As outlined above, a diet high in Omega 6s but low in Omega 3s increases inflammation in your body which subjects you to a long list of detrimental health conditions.

A diet that balances intake of Omega 3s and Omega 6s optimizes oxygen levels, reduces chronic inflammation and prevents many types of diseases including cancer. If you’re taking fish oil, you may be ingesting too many Omega 3s which can throw off the balance.

One of the major issues with the typical western diet consumed in the United States is that we are eating way too many Omega 6s relative to Omega 3s. This causes long term inflammation and that’s when a long list of detrimental health conditions can set in.

How EFAs Attract Oxygen

EFAs are basically a magnet for oxygen. EFAs in the cell attracts oxygen that’s in the bloodstream and transfer that oxygen into the cell. This process must take place in each of the body’s 100 trillion cells. Therefore, it doesn’t matter how deeply you breathe. If the EFAs are not sufficient, your cells will not absorb the necessary healthy levels of oxygen from your bloodstream and you will be susceptible to diseases such as cancer. When there is a 35% decrease in cellular oxygen, that’s when you become highly exposed to cancer.

Without a continuing supply of EFAs from food and proper supplementation, cellular oxygen transfer is significantly reduced. EFAs are essential to allowing the 100 trillion cells in your body to absorb enough oxygen to promote health and prevent disease.

How to Get The Right Quantity and Ratio of EFAs

To make sure your body is receiving the proper amounts and ratios of Essential Fatty Acids, it’s important to eat a variety of foods that keep the healthy ration in balance. In addition to your food diet, supplements are an effective method for obtaining the proper Essential Fatty Acids in ratios that promote healthy living.
