What is Neuropathy

Neuropathy and Peripheral Neuropathy are terms used to describe damage to a single nerve or a group of nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord. The nerves in these areas of the body comprise what is called the peripheral nervous system.

Neuropathy typically causes pain or numbness in your hands or feet. However, those symptoms could be almost anywhere in your body. To treat neuropathy, it’s important to seek the care of a health care professional specially trained in the body’s nervous system who can correctly diagnose the underlying cause of the problem.

The Peripheral Nervous System

The nerves that make up the peripheral nervous system serve as communication lines providing information and commands from the brain and spinal cord to all areas of your body and back again. The nerves of the peripheral nervous system consist of:
  • Sensory Nerves: These nerves communicate sensations such as cold, heat, pain and touch.
  • Motor Nerves: These nerves control movement and the muscles that enable you to move.
  • Autonomic Nerves: These nerves control the automatic or involuntary functions of your body such as heart rate, blood pressure and digestion.
When the nerves of the peripheral nervous system are not working properly, it can lead to a variety of symptoms throughout your body.

Causes of Neuropathy

Neuropathy is caused by a trauma to one or more nerves in the peripheral nervous system. Neuropathy can develop from such things as:
  • Injuries
  • Infections
  • Toxicity and Exposure to Toxins, including prescription drugs and medications.

One of the most common causes of neuropathy is diabetes. This is known as diabetic neuropathy.

Symptoms of Neuropathy

The symptoms of neuropathy can vary greatly depending on which types of nerves are impacted (sensory, motor or autonomic) and where the impacted nerves are located in the body. With many cases, neuropathy starts with numbness or tingling in your hands or feet. The intensity may build and spread into your arms or legs. Other types of neuropathy symptoms may include:

  • Burning pain
  • Sensitivity to touch
  • Weakness in muscle
  • Muscle paralysis
  • Loss of balance and coordination
  • Bladder or bowel problems

Neuropathies

Peripheral neuropathy is generally classified into one of the following types:

Mononeuropathy: This is a type of neuropathy that only affects a single nerve.

Polyneuropathy: This is a type of neuropathy that affects many nerves throughout the body.

Autonomic neuropathy: This is a form of polyneuropathy which affects the autonomic nerves that control involuntary functions of the body.
